FreeCell vs. Spider Solitaire: Which to Play?

Both games reward planning, but they ask you to manage different kinds of uncertainty. FreeCell shows the whole deal immediately. Spider gradually reveals cards and introduces new layers from the stock.

Do you enjoy seeing the whole puzzle?

FreeCell uses 52 face-up cards in eight columns, with no stock. You can trace where every needed card sits, although finding a route to it may take several rearrangements.

Spider uses 104 cards in ten columns, some initially hidden, plus stock packets. Each reveal changes what you know. Choose FreeCell for visible planning, or Spider if you enjoy adapting as new cards appear.

The same-looking stack follows different rules

FreeCell groups descend in alternating colors, and their maximum length depends on empty cells and spare columns. Spider groups descend in a single suit; ordinary Spider has no free cells and no FreeCell transfer-capacity formula.

The route to finishing is different

FreeCell builds four foundations upward from Ace to King, usually releasing low cards early. Spider collects eight complete suited runs downward from King to Ace, so preserving long suited groups becomes central.

Both allow any rank in an empty column. Spider additionally requires every column to be occupied before a stock deal. Its empty columns are therefore both useful workspaces and something to manage before drawing.

Try one small goal in each game

In FreeCell, try uncovering an Ace while keeping a free cell available. In One-Suit Spider, try revealing a hidden card and forming a longer descending run before dealing.

There is no need to choose permanently. Both offer solo assistance. If you enjoy elements of each, Four-Cell Spider Solitaire in the Originals collection adds temporary cells to four-suit Spider rules; it still moves suited groups, not alternating-color FreeCell groups.
