How to play

Goal

Checkmate the opposing king: attack it so no legal move can escape the threat.

How do the pieces move?: Rooks move straight, bishops diagonally, queens both ways, knights in an L. Kings one square, and pawns advance but capture diagonally.
How do I capture?: Move onto an opposing piece's square using your piece's normal movement, except for the pawn's diagonal capture.
What must I do in check?: A checked king must escape, capture the attacker, or block the attack. a move that leaves your king in check is illegal.
When may I castle?: An unmoved king and rook may castle through clear, unattacked squares while the king is not in check.
What happens on the last rank?: A pawn reaching the farthest rank promotes, usually to a queen but optionally to a rook, bishop, or knight.
How is checkmate different from check?: Checkmate is a check with no legal escape. it ends the game immediately.
